About

I'm Jade Nair, a recent graduate of Andover High School (Class of 2022).

Since I discovered my love for programming in ninth grade, I've been learning as much as I can. During the summer of 2019, I attended a three-week camp on Data Structures and Algorithms, and learned some object-oriented Java through an online class. At the start of tenth grade, I found myself in a programming class that was mostly review, thanks to my summer work. After discussion with my guidance counselor and my teacher, I started working with Energize Andover as an independent study project in September 2019. Since then, I've developed software that analyzes and visualizes real-world data in order to identify problematic temperature and carbon dioxide values for classrooms in the school. In 2020, I was mentored by a PhD student, Kate Connolly, while producing in-depth data visualizations for this reporting engine. I've presented each iteration of the software to the town Facilities and the Andover Green Advisory Board, and the Facilities will soon begin using my latest version as part of their analysis process. You can read more about this collaboration in Kate's words here.

During the pandemic, I came up with the idea to recruit a group of 5 eighth and ninth-grade girls into Energize Andover and teach them Python and Data Science over Zoom. After a week of successful classes, I expanded on my teaching experience to bring virtual technology classes to Andover Youth Services (AYS). In summer 2021, I continued leading the AYS initiative, but this time in person at the Cormier Youth Center. The programs I started have reached 83 students with 17 high-school instructors.

I've received local and national recognition for these initiatives (see Honors & Media below). In 2022, I was selected by the Andover High School administration to be honored as the Rotary Club of Andover's Citizens Who Care Student of the Year for my initiatives with Energize Andover in 2020 and Andover Youth Services in 2020 and 2021.

I'm really grateful to have participated in Energize Andover because I find fulfillment in using my skills to make a positive impact on my community!
